Ryan Cook has stepped down as head coach of the Netherlands men's cricket team with immediate effect, the Royal Dutch Cricket Association (KNCB) confirmed on Thursday, 25 June, ending a four-year stint that produced some of the most significant results in Dutch cricket history. Batting coach Heino Kuhn will take charge on an interim basis as the KNCB begins its search for a permanent successor.

Why Cook stepped down

Cook, 41, cited the birth of his second child and the demands of the role as the primary reasons for his departure. In a statement, he said the position now required a level of sustained focus and physical presence he could no longer commit to. The former South African cricketer had taken charge in May 2022, guiding the Netherlands through a period of rapid on-field growth.

'Coaching the Dutch men's team has without a shadow of a doubt been one of the highlights of my coaching career so far. It's been an absolute pleasure to lead the journey towards professionalism and creating a competitive cricket team with strong values,' Cook said.

He added: 'The KNCB and the team deserve someone who can give the job the full, sustained focus and presence it now requires. I know that the foundations are strong and the future is bright.'

Key achievements under Cook's tenure

Cook's four years at the helm coincided with a remarkable rise for Dutch cricket on the global stage. Under his leadership, the Netherlands qualified for the 2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Australia, where they defeated both Zimbabwe and South Africa. A year later, they secured a berth at the 2023 ODI World Cup in India — their first appearance at the 50-over showpiece since 2011 — and went on to beat South Africa and Bangladesh during the tournament.

Notably, the Netherlands currently sit third in the Cricket World Cup League 2 standings with 32 points from 28 matches, remaining firmly in contention for future global qualification.
