New Delhi, Feb 22 (NationPress) The South African batting lineup is set to undergo a rigorous assessment against Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakaravarthy during a crucial Super Eights matchup of the Men’s T20 World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad this Sunday evening, according to former all-rounder Robin Peterson.

In the three preceding league matches, the fast bowling ace Bumrah has secured four wickets while maintaining an economy rate of six and a strike rate of 13.5. However, the larger challenge for the Proteas batters lies in tackling Chakaravarthy, who took three wickets against the Netherlands, extending his remarkable streak of claiming at least one wicket in each of his last 17 innings, equaling Arshdeep Singh's record.

With a repertoire of variations and overspin that consistently yields results, Chakaravarthy boasts nine wickets from four matches at an impressive economy of 5.2 and a strike rate of 8, placing him joint second on the tournament’s wicket-taking leaderboard, just behind Shadley Van Schalkwyk from the USA.

Against South Africa, Chakaravarthy has claimed 22 wickets in eight T20 internationals, including his best bowling performance of 5-17 in Gqeberha in 2024. Only Arshdeep has more dismissals (23) against the Proteas than Chakaravarthy, who has emerged as the leading wicket-taker in T20Is since 2025.

“The primary focus for South African batters will be their approach to Bumrah and Chakaravarthy. Together, their eight overs typically yield around 60 runs, which means that the remaining bowlers need to be dealt with for another 120 runs, a task made challenging by top-tier bowlers like Axar and Kuldeep,” Peterson shared in an exclusive interview with IANS.

Peterson elaborated on how South Africa should tackle their batting strategy against Bumrah. “I believe South Africa will have strategized on how to approach Bumrah. The mindset, as I know from the coach, is to take him on without fear. Timidity will not yield results against him.

“It’s crucial to put pressure on world-class bowlers to disrupt their rhythm. Players like Markram, who has faced Bumrah, and Quinton de Kock will be vital, as their experience in Indian conditions and the IPL is essential for setting the tone,” remarked Peterson, who has played 15 Tests, 79 ODIs, and 21 T20Is.

He identified finisher Tristan Stubbs and wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton as key players who could inflict damage on the Indian bowlers. “How they handle Axar will be significant. Stubbs has ample experience facing Axar in the IPL with Delhi Capitals.

“I see him as a crucial player in the South African batting lineup. Rickelton’s ability to hit sixes off spinners will also be critical. I expect South Africa to aggressively challenge the Indian bowlers rather than adopt a conservative approach,” he stated.

South Africa, who were defeated by India in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup final in Barbados, have seen significant changes under head coach Shukri Conrad and come into this fixture with a squad that Peterson describes as more balanced and confident than the team that fell short against the defending champions at Kensington Oval.

“They certainly appear confident facing India. A key strength for South Africa is the number of players who participate in the IPL. Therefore, there are no surprises when playing against the Indian team.

“Each player has IPL experience and knows what to expect from India. They have improved significantly since their last World Cup encounter in Barbados,” he noted.

Peterson attributed this broader shift in mindset to the influence of Conrad, who guided South Africa to victory in the 2025 World Test Championship and has taken charge across all formats following Rob Walter's departure.

“This team has progressed well under the new management and coach Shukri Conrad. He has certainly instilled a great deal of confidence in them. I believe South Africa is approaching this with a different mindset compared to previous events.”

Peterson also highlighted Aiden Markram's pivotal role in fostering a settled and focused environment within the South African team. His excellent form and temperament have set a positive tone for his teammates to flourish. Markram has been in phenomenal form, amassing 178 runs at a strike rate of 187.36, showcasing his role as South Africa’s batting leader.

“Aiden Markram is an exceptional leader and captain. One of his strengths is that players respect him. He remains calm under pressure. In the SA20, he has participated in three finals with Sunrisers, winning two, demonstrating his outstanding leadership abilities,” Peterson said.

Peterson emphasized that a captain's performance can significantly influence the entire squad. “When your captain is in form and making sound decisions on the field, it greatly boosts the team’s confidence and potential achievements. As a tactician, Aiden is superb. However, his greatest asset may be his ability to unify the group and maintain their focus, especially leading into a crucial match against India.”

“He maintains a calm demeanor during high-pressure moments, and when opportunities arise, he takes the lead, particularly in batting and fielding. While we discuss Aiden Markram’s tactical acumen and batting prowess, his fielding skills and capacity to create opportunities are also vital in leading the team effectively during significant matches,” Peterson elaborated.

However, Peterson was careful to acknowledge that India has also evolved since their victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, particularly with the retirements of key batsmen Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, giving rise to a squad with enhanced bowling depth.

“India is a formidable T20 side. Comparing the two squads and their evolution since the last meeting in the final in Barbados—Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are no longer present, but they have bolstered their bowling strength. The addition of Varun Chakaravarthy has added a new dimension to India’s bowling attack.”

He added that India's position as the home nation and reigning ICC champions carries its own set of expectations, which might work in South Africa's favor. “There is undoubtedly pressure on India as the home nation and due to their success in ICC events. South Africa has a singular triumph, the inaugural Champions Trophy. However, they have not won any white-ball competition in the modern era.”

Despite this trophy drought, Peterson is confident in South Africa’s momentum heading into the clash. “I genuinely believe the South African squad has improved. They have gained strength since that final, with a better-balanced lineup and enhanced firepower in fast bowling.”

“This match represents a contest between a revamped Indian team from that final and a South African squad that is filled with confidence and has made notable improvements since then. It promises to be a thrilling encounter as both teams arrive in exceptional form, making them the two most formidable teams in the competition,” he concluded.
