Centurion, Feb 1 (NationPress) The SA20 witnessed a spectacular outburst of runs during the match between Pretoria Capitals and MI Cape Town at a packed Centurion. Despite interruptions from lightning and rain, the thrilling atmosphere persisted as the audience enjoyed a remarkable batting display.
With bowlers having the upper hand in Season 3 so far, it was finally the batters' turn to dazzle, culminating in a staggering total of 417 runs scored that night.
These two teams had previously engaged in a similar high-scoring encounter last season, amassing a record 462 runs at the same venue.
Regrettably for the home supporters, this marked the last appearance of their team as the Capitals fell short by 27 runs, finishing at 195/8 against MI Cape Town’s 222/3.
The Capitals are now unable to secure a playoff spot, with Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Joburg Super Kings advancing to the Eliminator, scheduled for Centurion on Wednesday.
MI Cape Town started strong with their dynamic opening duo of Rassie van der Dussen (30 off 22 balls) and Ryan Rickelton (22 off 13 balls), who put together 45 runs in just 4.4 overs.
This initial burst set the stage for the impressive partnership between Reeza Hendricks and Dewald Brevis. The pair combined Hendricks' finesse and timing with Brevis' explosive hitting to forge an unbroken 142-run partnership off merely 68 balls for the fourth wicket.
They matched each other nearly run for run, with Hendricks finishing on 77 not out off 44 balls (4x4, 5x6) and Brevis on 73 not out off only 32 balls (6x4, 6x6).
“Absolutely (happy) for us to have a few wins on the bounce and play beautiful cricket. I am so excited for the boys! We played so great as a team and it's even better off the field,” Brevis expressed.
“I've been putting in hard work during my downtime. It’s essential to focus on your game, engage with those who truly care, and most importantly, enjoy the game while contributing to the team.
“I'm playing the way I did as a young boy when I first arrived on the scene. There was a time when I overthought my game, but now I’m simply watching the ball,” Brevis added.
The Capitals fought valiantly during their run chase, with Will Smeed (52 off 36 balls, 9x4) marking his second half-century of the tournament. However, MI Cape Town consistently took wickets, limiting the home team to 195/8.
“We batted well in parts but failed to establish a rhythm. Losing key wickets at critical moments left us short. I believe it was a good pitch, and we had a chance but just couldn't execute,” stated Capitals captain Kyle Verreynne.
“Our first five matches were squeezed into 8-9 days. If you don't start well, it’s hard to recover. That said, we played some good cricket but lost crucial games, which is disappointing. It has been tough to find that rhythm and momentum, which explains our current position,” he added.
The two teams are set to clash again on Sunday at Newlands before MI Cape Town heads to St George’s Park for their Qualifier 1 matchup against Paarl Royals on Tuesday.
