Cape Town, Jan 30 (NationPress) MI Cape Town showcased an exceptional display of fielding, bowling, and batting, securing their first-ever appearance in the SA20 Playoffs with a commanding 10-wicket victory against Sunrisers Eastern Cape at Newlands.

This victory sets the stage for an all-Western Cape Qualifier 1, where current table leaders Paarl Royals will face MI Cape Town at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on February 4. The winner will move directly to the final at the Wanderers on February 8.

From the beginning, MI Cape Town was outstanding, with Dewald Brevis, Corbin Bosch, and Reeza Hendricks executing spectacular catches, leading to the dismissal of Sunrisers Eastern Cape for a mere 109 runs.

Brevis, in particular, left the Newlands crowd in awe with a breathtaking one-handed catch, flying horizontally before rolling just shy of the boundary.

“Fielding is crucial, especially in this format. Prior to the match, we discussed maintaining continuity. The effort put into fielding is vital. Our excellent ground fielding was significant, contributing to our success. Securing a bonus point and finishing in the top two was essential,” remarked MI Cape Town's Rashid Khan.

“It's fantastic for the team, and I hope this continues. We’re keeping things simple and having fun. We faced challenges over the past couple of years as a team. We focused on enjoying ourselves, getting the basics right, and putting in effort on the field while putting the past behind us. Everyone stepping up and taking responsibility has been key,” he added.

Motivated by their fielding efforts, MI Cape Town's bowlers produced an equally impressive performance, highlighted by allrounder Bosch’s career-best figures of 4-19 and Kagiso Rabada’s 2-14.

David Bedingham attempted to stabilize the Sunrisers’ innings with a respectable 45 runs off 45 balls, but he lacked adequate support after his opening partner, Tony de Zorzi, making his debut for the defending champions, fell early to Rabada.

The chase for MI Cape Town was smooth sailing, with Ryan Rickelton scoring an unbeaten 59 off 36 balls and Rassie van der Dussen contributing an unblemished 48 off 30 balls, forming an unbroken 110-run opening partnership.

Van der Dussen initiated the innings with a boundary and a six off Marco Jansen in the very first over, while Rickelton continued to impress the Newlands crowd.

The only downside for MI Cape Town was Van der Dussen falling short of a half-century by two runs, shortly after Rickelton celebrated his milestone in front of another packed Newlands audience.

The Sunrisers have one critical league match left against the Royals at St George's Park on Saturday to secure their playoff position.
