Wuhan Open 2026: Sabalenka, Pegula exit; Guo Hanyu reaches last 16
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Top seed Aryna Sabalenka and second seed Jessica Pegula were both eliminated from the Wuhan Open on Wednesday, 14 October, in a dramatic day of upsets at the WTA 1000 event in Wuhan, China. Meanwhile, China's Guo Hanyu made history by advancing to the round of 16 at a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career.
Sabalenka's Title Defence Ends in Tiebreak Heartbreak
Ann Li of the United States handed three-time champion Sabalenka a stunning exit, winning 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Sabalenka had taken the opening set in just 35 minutes and appeared in command, only for Li to claw level before engineering a remarkable third-set comeback.
Sabalenka trailed 2-5 in the decider, saved five match points to hold, broke back, and then repelled two more match points before forcing a tiebreak — which Li ultimately claimed. The result ends Sabalenka's bid for a record-equalling fourth Wuhan title.
'I think on some of those match points I was about to lose my mind. I was about to crash out. In the end, you just have to realise, I didn't play bad, and she just played really well,' Li said. 'And so you have to just play point by point. And I knew that if I stayed there, I could get to the situation again.'
Li added: 'For me, it just shows that I'm trying to improve every day from every match. My only goal was to improve from the last match I played. I know that if I play my tennis and I stay positive, and I stay physical and intense, I can win any match.'
Pegula Falls to Ostapenko Comeback
Second seed Jessica Pegula, runner-up at last year's Wuhan Open, was ousted by Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia in another three-set contest: 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-3. Pegula had dominated the opening set 6-2, but Ostapenko's trademark aggressive hitting gradually wrestled control of the match.
The defeat continues a difficult stretch for Pegula, who has been unable to convert strong positions at major events into deep runs.
Guo Hanyu Makes WTA 1000 History for China
In the day's most celebrated result on home soil, Guo Hanyu defeated Katie Volynets of the United States 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (3) to reach the last 16 at a WTA 1000 event for the first time. The win drew an electric response from the home crowd in Wuhan.
'It was another very tough match today, and the score stayed close,' Guo said. 'Until the last point, there was no way to say the match was over, so I just tried to give everything I had from start to finish and do the best I could. I'm happy to have won another match.'
Guo's next opponent is fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine. 'It will be an even harder match, and I will prepare more tonight. The first thing is to recover well, so that I can step on court tomorrow at 100 percent,' Guo said.
Key Results From Wednesday's Play
Seventh-seeded Iga Swiatek progressed with a straight-sets win over Magdalena Frech. Iva Jovic of the United States, seeded 10th, defeated Dayana Yastremska 6-4, 6-1. Britain's Sonay Kartal caused an upset, beating ninth-seeded Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 6-0, 7-5. China's Shi Han lost to Leylah Fernandez of Canada 6-3, 6-4.
The draw now opens up significantly following the exits of two top seeds, with Svitolina, Swiatek, and a resurgent Ostapenko among those best placed heading into the round of 16.
