Mumbai, June 4 (NationPress) India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav dazzled on the opening day of the third season of the T20 Mumbai League 2025 with a stunning 25-ball half-century. Despite his remarkable performance, it was Sairaj Patil's exceptional cameo that propelled the Eagle Thane Strikers to a thrilling five-wicket victory against Triumph Knights Mumbai North East at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday.
Suryakumar scored 50 runs, backed by Jigar Rana who made 53, as the Knights managed to post a competitive total of 179/7 after opting to bat first. The innings started shakily, but Rana and Parikshit Valsangkar forged a critical 88-run partnership to stabilize the innings. After Rana fell to a slower delivery and Parikshit was run out shortly after, Suryakumar took charge.
The Indian star found an ally in Jay Jain (24), as they added 40 runs to maintain the momentum during the middle overs. Jain's innings ended when he was stumped by Amit Pandey, with keeper Anish Chaudhary swiftly removing the bails. Despite losing wickets quickly, Suryakumar remained composed, unleashing a barrage of powerful shots to secure a strong finish for the Knights, setting an exciting tone for the tournament.
In reply, Varun Lavande led the Strikers' chase with a blistering 57 off 38 balls, helping them reach 89/1 at the halfway point. His 73-run partnership with Anish (37) laid a strong foundation, although the Knights managed to break the momentum with a couple of quick wickets.
However, Sairaj Patil stepped in and ensured the Strikers stayed competitive, smashing four towering sixes in his 22-ball unbeaten 47, sealing the match for his team.
SoBo Mumbai Falcons and MSC Maratha Royals also tasted victory earlier in the day.
In the tournament's first match at the DY Patil Stadium, the Falcons triumphed over ARCS Andheri in a Super Over after rain interrupted the game just three overs into their innings.
Batting first, the Falcons were at 26/1 when the game was halted, with opener Ishan Mulchandani (8 off 5) dismissed by ARCS Andheri spinner Musheer Khan. Stand-in captain Angkrish Raghuvanshi (15 not out) and Amogh Bhatkal (1 not out) were at the crease when the downpour forced an early conclusion to the match.
In the Super Over, Akash Parker scored a quick 27 runs for the Falcons, while ARCS Andheri faltered, managing only 13 runs, resulting in a narrow victory for SoBo Mumbai Falcons.
Regarded as one of India's premier domestic T20 leagues, the tournament was inaugurated with the presence of MCA President Ajinkya Naik, Secretary Abhay Hadap, former MCA President Dr. Vijay Patil, Chairman of League Governing Council Vihang Sarnaik, and other notable MCA Apex Council Members at the DY Patil Stadium.
The day's second match, played at Wankhede Stadium between Aakash Tigers MWS and Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals, was also impacted by rain and adjusted to a nine-over game. Batting first, the Royals set a competitive score of 96/4, thanks to Rohan Raje's explosive 48 off just 21 balls. In response, the Tigers could only muster 88/5, with Maxwell David Swaminathan shining with the ball, claiming two key wickets to secure an eight-run victory for the Royals.
