Wellington, Aug 15 (NationPress) The selector for the New Zealand men's cricket team, Sam Wells, has announced his decision to step down from his position to focus on his professional obligations, as confirmed by NZC on Friday.
According to NZC, Wells, who specializes in dispute resolution, became a partner at the Dunedin law firm Gallaway Cook Allan late last year, which has led him to resign from the selection role he has held since September 2023.
During his time as selector, Wells managed a significant transition for the BlackCaps, helping players like Rachin Ravindra, Muhammad Abbas, Will O’Rourke, Nathan Smith, Ben Sears, Mitch Hay, and Zak Foulkes establish themselves on the international stage.
Under his guidance, New Zealand reached the final of the 2024 ICC Champions Trophy and achieved a historic three-nil Test series victory in India—a landmark first for the New Zealand men's team.
Wells expressed that the role, which encompassed both the BlackCaps and the men's New Zealand A program, was both challenging and rewarding.
“It has been a great honor to serve as the selection manager for the BlackCaps over the last two years. I am truly thankful to NZC for allowing me to contribute to the national team. Collaborating with the passionate coaches, skilled players, and devoted support staff in New Zealand has been a privilege,” he stated.
“Although I have greatly enjoyed my time in this role, I have made the tough choice to step back in order to focus on my personal and professional commitments beyond cricket.
“I will always be a proud supporter of the BLACKCAPS and will continue to cheer for the team as they strive for future achievements,” Wells added.
Wells was the third selector for the BLACKCAPS since NZC restructured their model to grant the Head Coach ultimate authority in selection, following Bruce Edgar in 2013, and Gavin Larsen in 2015.
NZC announced that they would begin the search for a new BlackCaps selector following Wells' resignation.
NZC chief executive Scott Weenink expressed sadness at Wells' departure but acknowledged his reasons for stepping down.
“Sam has played a vital role in maintaining the high standards of the BlackCaps, guiding the team through transitions as key players have moved on and new talent has emerged. His thorough approach and analytical mindset brought invaluable insights to the role. While we will miss Sam, we are grateful for his contributions,” he remarked.
