Sanfida Nongrum Shines as India Returns to AFC Women’s Asian Cup with Historic Goal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 6 (NationPress) In a dazzling display during India’s inaugural match at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026, Sanfida Nongrum netted her first international goal in the 52nd minute after being substituted in at half-time against Vietnam. This remarkable moment not only symbolized the return of Indian scoring prowess at the continental level but also heralded the emergence of a promising talent in international football.
However, India faced a setback as an injury-time goal led to a 1-2 loss against Vietnam in their Group C opener on Wednesday.
The milestone of scoring in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup is particularly notable as the last time India managed to find the back of the net in this prestigious tournament, Sanfida had yet to be born. This historic achievement occurred on her senior debut, where the 20-year-old made her mark by scoring India’s first goal at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in 23 years.
Sanfida expressed mixed feelings about her debut goal, stating, "While I’m thrilled to have scored on my first outing for India, I’m disappointed about the loss in the dying moments. We’ll take this experience and move on to the match against Japan," as reported by AIFF.com.
Her journey in football began in Shillong, Meghalaya, where she grew up in a family deeply passionate about the sport. It was her cousin brother who first introduced her to football.
"I began playing with my cousin brother at home, and soon, we were hitting the fields daily to run and play together," she reminisced.
By the age of five or six, these informal games became a routine for her.
At around six years old, she joined the Royal Wahingdoh FC academy in Shillong. Although initially viewed as too young for formal selection, this experience laid the groundwork for her organized football journey.
Her rise continued through local competitions, where she represented her district and state in youth tournaments, while participating in grassroots training sessions multiple times a week.
“My training and match schedule was packed. I practiced regularly and played whenever I had the chance, whether at the district or state level,” she shared.
At age 12, her first significant exposure outside of Shillong came when she participated in the Subroto Cup with her school, marking the first time football took her beyond her hometown. Two years later, she proudly represented Meghalaya in the Sub Junior Girls' National Football Championship in Odisha.
The pivotal moment in her career arrived at just 15 when she left home to pursue football seriously in Bengaluru. "It was a monumental moment for me," she noted.
In Bengaluru, she joined Bangalore United FC, training under the guidance of former Indian goalkeeper Chitra Gangadharan, marking her first experience of living away from home in a professional environment.
After two years in Karnataka, Sanfida made her mark in the Indian Women’s League (IWL). She started with Goa’s Sirvodem Sports Club during the 2021-22 season in Bhubaneswar, followed by a stint with Sports Odisha in Ahmedabad during the next season.
She then transitioned to Garhwal United FC, where her career took a significant leap. Over time, she became one of the senior players in the squad, eventually taking on leadership roles.
Her leadership culminated in the 2024-25 season when Garhwal United clinched the IWL 2 title under her captaincy. Later that year, she scored a stunning long-range goal that led the club to its inaugural victory in the Indian Women’s League in December 2025.
Throughout her journey, her family’s unwavering support has been pivotal. Her father, a driver, and her mother, a homemaker, have always encouraged her, even from afar.
“My family has always instilled in me the importance of perseverance. In football, there are wins, losses, and draws, but the key is to keep pushing forward and working hard,” Sanfida remarked.
