Nortje's thunderbolt pace anchors SEC's SA20 Season 5 title charge
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) head coach Adrian Birrell has identified raw pace as the cornerstone of the franchise's pursuit of a fourth SA20 title, with Anrich Nortje leading a fast-bowling arsenal that has been further reinforced by the signings of Nandre Burger and Craig Overton at the Season 5 auction earlier this month.
Nortje: The X-Factor in SEC's Attack
Nortje, currently featuring in South Africa's Test series against Australia, delivered a decisive 18-wicket haul during SEC's title-winning campaign earlier this year. Birrell described the tearaway right-armer as the centrepiece of an attack brimming with options. 'Anrich Nortje brings us that thunderbolt. So, I think we've got options within that. They can't all play, but we've got good options and backup for any injuries that could happen. I'm delighted with our bowling attack,' Birrell said in a statement issued by the tournament on Friday.
Having guided SEC to three titles in four seasons, Birrell has made the franchise the most decorated side in SA20 history. While rival franchises prioritised batting depth and balance at the auction, SEC doubled down on their pace-first philosophy.
Burger and Overton Secured at Base Price
The additions of left-arm seamer Burger and seam-bowling all-rounder Overton came at their respective base prices — a result Birrell described as a significant coup given the franchise's constrained budget. 'It's absolutely a huge X-factor, so yes, we wanted those two players. There were other options that we could have gone to had we not been able to get them. We didn't have a massive budget, but we got them at base price, both of them, so we were absolutely delighted,' he said.
Burger, however, is currently recovering from a recurrence of a lumbar stress reaction that forced him out of the 2026 Major League Cricket (MLC) season with the Texas Super Kings in June. Birrell remained confident the left-armer would be available. 'We've got another left-arm seamer in Nandre, who's very experienced. He is injured right now, but the background checks that we've done indicate that he should be okay for the tournament. When he is fit, he bowls quickly, so we wanted to get him on our books,' he said.
Jansen's Record and Overton's Role
Marco Jansen has been integral to SEC's dominance, amassing 60 wickets across the first four SA20 seasons — just one behind Ottneil Baartman, the all-time leading wicket-taker in the competition's history. Overton is viewed as a like-for-like cover alongside Jansen, capable of contributing across batting, bowling, and fielding.
'Marco's done so well over the four seasons for us; he's vital for us in the powerplay and at the death, and his batting and fielding are outstanding. So, he's a three-format player, a three-stage player for us, and so is Overton now, to do a similar role and bat in a similar position,' Birrell said.
Adam Milne of New Zealand and South African seamer Lutho Sipamla complete a pace battery that Birrell believes is the deepest in the competition. 'But then we've got Adam Milne, who's an out-and-out swing bowler and has got great skills at the front and the back end. Delighted to have him in the team again, and that's why we're so keen to retain him,' he added.
Season 5 Opener and What to Watch
SEC will launch their Season 5 campaign against the Pretoria Capitals at St George's Park in Gqeberha on 17 January. The franchise's consistent investment in pace depth over batting firepower has been a calculated bet that has paid off across three title runs — and Birrell shows no sign of deviating from that blueprint heading into Season 5.
