Mumbai, Oct 27 (NationPress) Security protocols have been enhanced in Navi Mumbai in light of a harassment incident involving two Australian women cricketers during the ongoing ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 in Indore.
As per police accounts, the players were approached by a man riding a motorcycle on Khajrana Road, Indore, early Thursday while they were en route from the Radisson Blu Hotel to a local café. The suspect, identified as Aqeel Khan, has been taken into custody by Madhya Pradesh Police.
In reaction to this incident, both tournament organizers and local authorities have increased security measures around hotels, training sites, and stadiums in Navi Mumbai, where the remaining matches of the Women's World Cup will occur.
The event has ignited significant outrage among fans and the public throughout India, with many calling for strict punishment for the offender. Conversely, some supporters raised concerns that tighter security could hinder players' accessibility to fans.
“It’s disheartening that such incidents continue to occur. The guilty must face justice, but we also hope that fans maintain their connection with the players,” shared a fan outside the Navi Mumbai stadium.
Authorities have guaranteed that while security will be heightened, efforts will persist to foster a safe yet inviting atmosphere for both players and attendees for the remainder of the tournament.
The police reported that the incident unfolded near Khajrana Road. The suspect, Aqeel Khan, allegedly followed two players on his motorcycle, inappropriately touched one of them, and then fled.
It was Danny Simmons, the security manager for the Australian cricket team, who first notified Indore Police. A swift collaboration between Simmons and local law enforcement led to a prompt investigation, according to police officials.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rajesh Dandotiya informed IANS that the accused, Aqeel, a resident of Azad Nagar in Indore, has a history of previous criminal activities.
