Brisbane, Dec 8 (NationPress) Australia is ready to face a difficult decision regarding the selection of Michael Neser for the upcoming Adelaide Test, following his impressive performance at the Gabba. The team is aiming for a series-clinching win in the third Ashes Test scheduled in Adelaide.
Neser, who was chosen over seasoned spinner Nathan Lyon for the day-night match, showcased his talent by taking five wickets during England's second innings, reaffirming his value with the pink ball.
With Australia captain Pat Cummins likely to return to the squad, selectors may also consider bringing back Lyon, who was omitted from the Brisbane Test. Batter Marnus Labuschagne mentioned that selectors are focused on ensuring the team’s composition is optimized for the conditions in Adelaide.
"I’m not a selector, but I believe the selectors evaluated this match objectively, determining the best strategy to secure a win using all available data on pink-ball cricket," Labuschagne stated.
"They assess what has worked in past games, whether it’s pace or the type of bowler, and then make their decisions," he added.
If Cummins, Lyon, and Josh Hazlewood rejoin the squad in Adelaide, some players will have to step aside after Neser, Scott Boland, and Brendan Doggett all impressed during their time at the Gabba.
Neser's contribution in England's second innings was particularly noteworthy, which Labuschagne anticipated. "To witness him take five wickets with an older ball was incredible. Earlier in the season, I hoped he would get his opportunity," Labuschagne remarked.
"I sensed his potential and to see him perform successfully, especially after some initial nerves in the first innings, was gratifying. He just keeps excelling and we haven’t even seen the best of his batting yet, which is exciting because he has so much more to offer with both bat and ball," he added.
Australia leads the series 2-0 after a dominant eight-wicket win over England in Brisbane on Sunday, and they now have over a week to prepare for the pivotal third Test at the Adelaide Oval starting December 17.
