Toronto, Aug 8 (NationPress) Ben Shelton has achieved a remarkable milestone in his career by securing the men's singles title at the Canadian Open after a thrilling match, defeating Karen Khachanov with scores of 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6(3).
This victory makes Shelton the youngest American to win an ATP Masters 1000 title since Andy Roddick, who was 21 when he claimed the Miami title in 2004. Shelton also climbed to fourth place in the ATP Live Race to Turin, significantly enhancing his prospects of qualifying for the ATP Finals in November.
After navigating through two previous matches that went to third-set tiebreaks, Shelton faced another challenge in the final. He lost the first set in a tiebreak but bounced back to win the second. In the decisive tiebreak at 6-6, he quickly established a 3-0 lead, which he maintained, closing out the match on his second match point. The final lasted for an intense two hours and 48 minutes.
With this title, Shelton becomes the fourth player to win his first Masters 1000 title in 2025, joining Jack Draper (Indian Wells), Jakub Mensik (Miami), and Casper Ruud (Madrid). This victory marks Shelton's third career title, complementing his wins in Tokyo in 2023 and Houston in 2024, showcasing his consistent success over the last three years.
"It’s a surreal feeling. The week has been long, and the path to the final was challenging. I played my best tennis when it counted. I was clutch, I persevered, and I showed resilience—all the qualities I admire in myself," Shelton expressed.
In the opening set, Khachanov delivered 10 forehand winners, applying pressure and forcing Shelton back. However, under the guidance of his coach and father Bryan Shelton, Ben adapted his strategy in the second and third sets, becoming more aggressive.
Shelton now holds a 2-0 advantage over Khachanov in their ATP head-to-head record, having previously defeated him in Indian Wells earlier this year. The two players are set to potentially clash again in the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open.
