Cincinnati, Aug 11 (NationPress) Ben Shelton advanced to the third round of the Cincinnati Open after Camilo Ugo Carabelli was forced to retire mid-match due to a knee injury.
Just three days after clinching his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Toronto, Shelton was ahead 6-3, 3-1 after 64 minutes when the Argentine withdrew.
Carabelli clutched his knee on the very first point of the fourth game in the second set after an awkward forward movement. Despite a medical timeout, he couldn't move comfortably and decided to retire right after finishing Shelton’s service game, according to ATP reports.
"I feel for Camilo, and it’s obviously not the way you want to advance. I wish him a speedy recovery," Shelton remarked. He will next face veteran Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut.
On another note, world No. 3 Alexander Zverev showcased his serving prowess against American Nishesh Basavareddy, breezing into the third round with a 6-3, 6-3 victory, marking his 40th win of the year.
Zverev expressed satisfaction with his performance, noting he was glad to navigate through the match without depleting too much energy and avoiding the daytime heat.
"I requested a night match; coming from Toronto, where conditions are much cooler, I need time to adapt to the heat. I’m pleased with my win and performance," Zverev stated.
The two-time ATP Finals champion will next face 27th seed American Brandon Nakashima, who secured a tough 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) victory over Belgian qualifier Alexander Blockx.
In other matches, Karen Khachanov, who lost to Shelton in a tense third-set tiebreak in the Toronto final, won his opening match in Cincinnati against French qualifier Valentin Royer with a score of 6-4, 7-6.
The World No. 12 served seven aces as per ATP Stats, dominating with his forehand in a match lasting one hour and 50 minutes. He will face American wild card Jenson Brooksby next.
