New Delhi, July 8 (NationPress) As the Indian national football team faces challenges and dives down the FIFA rankings, with concerns about qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup 2027, coach Ravi Kumar Punia emphasizes the urgent need for an Indian head coach for the senior men's national team.
In the absence of a head coach following Manolo Marquez's exit, Punia argues that familiar figures like Khalid Jamil, who has led the women's team to success, would be more effective for the men's team due to their understanding of local players.
“Why hire external candidates when we have skilled coaches here? Coaches like Khalid Jamil possess the right attributes. Just as a father knows his family’s strengths, an Indian coach understands the players’ dynamics better,” he stated.
“An Indian coach has witnessed these players evolve from grassroots to professional levels. Hence, I firmly believe an Indian should lead the national team. The outcomes would surely be more favorable, as they comprehend the players’ capabilities and limitations during competitions,” Punia shared with IANS.
The former defender, pivotal in helping Rajasthan United secure I-League qualification in 2021, also addressed the recent discourse on relegation in the ISL, arguing that I-League clubs currently lack the financial resources to compete with ISL clubs.
“The ISL functions at a superior level with robust financial backing, while I-League teams are struggling and lack promotion to that tier. The FSDL aims to support I-League clubs with better financial stability for competitiveness,” he explained.
“Even if an ISL club faces relegation, they retain resources and quality players. I advocate for the promotion of more teams to the I-League and an increase in match opportunities, ensuring everyone has a chance to play in the ISL,” he concluded.
