New Delhi, Oct 27 (NationPress) India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been taken to a hospital in Sydney following a left rib cage injury he sustained during Saturday’s match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Iyer has been in the ICU since he was rapidly transported to the hospital by the BCCI medical team on Saturday. He is anticipated to undergo further evaluations by specialists on Monday, who will determine the appropriate course for his recovery.
It has also been reported that Iyer's vital signs, such as blood pressure, were fluctuating dangerously, prompting the Indian team’s medical staff to act swiftly and take him to the hospital.
“While at the hospital, scans indicated internal bleeding caused by the impact of the fall. Upon this discovery, Iyer was promptly admitted to mitigate the risk of infection spreading to other vital organs,” sources stated.
“Depending on the specialists’ assessments, he may remain in ICU for several additional days or be closely monitored for possibly a week. His family has been kept informed and may travel to Sydney if necessary to support him,” the sources added.
The incident unfolded during the 33rd over of Australia’s innings when Alex Carey mishit a short ball from seam-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana. Positioned at backward point, Iyer dashed back as the ball swirled above him, leaping full length to execute a tumbling catch near deep third man.
This remarkable effort secured a crucial wicket for India, but Iyer was seen on the ground, visibly in pain and clutching his left side. Subsequently, with the assistance of teammates and physio Kamlesh Jain, Iyer left the field and did not return as Australia was bowled out for 236 in 46.4 overs.
In response, India successfully chased the target, bolstered by an unbeaten 168-run partnership between Rohit Sharma (121 not out) and Virat Kohli (74 not out). Iyer, who is 31 years old, is not part of India’s T20I squad for the upcoming series against Australia, starting on Wednesday.
