Singapore, March 22 (NationPress) India's Shubhankar Sharma concluded the weather-affected Porsche Singapore Classic at the Laguna National Resort on Saturday with a double bogey followed by an eagle. After shooting a 68 in the opening round, Sharma added a 72 in the second round, placing him at T-38 as the tournament was shortened to 54 holes due to heavy rain that canceled the first round.
Sharma now stands at 4-under for 36 holes, while fellow Indian Veer Ahlawat, who aims to improve upon his second-place finish at last year's Hero Indian Open, struggled and missed the cut with rounds of 73 and 79.
Dan Erickson, who qualified for the Tour through Q-School, birdied the final hole to take the outright lead after two rounds. The American, among the late starters on Day Two, carded an impressive 64, reaching the pinnacle at Laguna National Golf Resort Club.
The title race is tight, with 25 players within four strokes of Erickson’s 11-under-par score.
Sharma recorded one-over after bogeys on the fourth and ninth holes, interspersed with a birdie on the seventh. He managed birdies on the 11th and 13th to go one-under but faltered with a bogey on the 16th, followed by a double bogey on the 17th, complicating his day. Nonetheless, he rallied to eagle the 18th, finishing with an even-par 72.
Tom McKibbin, who was leading at 11 under before a bogey at the ninth (his last hole), saw his position change. Adrien Saddier, Matthew Jordan, Fabrizio Zanotti, and Richard Mansell are all tied at ten under as they head into an exciting final 18 holes.
Since turning professional in 2013, Shubhankar has achieved eight professional victories, peaking at a World Ranking of 64 in March 2018.
In December 2017, the 28-year-old claimed his inaugural European Tour victory at the Joburg Open, followed by another win at the Maybank Championship in February 2018. He boasts two European Tour wins, two on the Asian Tour, one on the Sunshine Tour, and six across other tours to date.
