New Delhi, Oct 5 (NationPress) Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh expressed his views on Shubman Gill’s appointment as ODI captain, supporting the BCCI's decision which he believes was made with the team’s future in mind, particularly the 2027 ODI World Cup.
On Saturday, the BCCI unveiled India’s T20I and ODI squads for the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia, with Gill emerging as the foremost choice for captaincy, succeeding Rohit Sharma.
Two former Indian captains -- Rohit and Virat Kohli -- will now take the field under Gill’s leadership. In a discussion with IANS regarding the selection committee’s choice, Harbhajan stated:
“Shubman Gill has been named captain as he embodies a futuristic vision. The focus is set on the 2027 World Cup, especially with the tournament being hosted in India. This decision was made with that event in consideration. While Rohit Sharma could have continued as captain, the selectors are clearly thinking long-term.”
The 45-year-old further expressed admiration for Gill’s performance in red-ball cricket during his first captaincy stint against England, where the Shubman Gill-led Indian Test team managed to draw the five-match Anderson Tendulkar trophy 2-2, returning home with pride.
“Gill’s ultimate test as a captain occurred in England, and he passed it with flying colors. Following that England series, I believe the decision was made to allow Shubman Gill to lead the future. Rohit Sharma is undoubtedly a talented player who has effectively led the team. He commands immense respect in the dressing room and is well-regarded by his teammates,” he added.
When asked if Rohit deserved a longer tenure as captain, Harbhajan opined that the transition was essential, indicating that an early decision was made to secure the team's future. Praising Rohit for his leadership and wishing him success ahead, Harbhajan remarked:
“As a captain, Rohit has kept the team united, and his success rate in ODIs is remarkably high. While he could have continued as captain, this decision seems to be forward-focused. Wishing Rohit all the best for what lies ahead; even though he’s no longer captain, his respect within the team will persist. The team will benefit from Rohit's leadership attributes.”
