New Delhi, Oct 5 (NationPress) Harbhajan Singh expressed his support for the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) choice of Shubman Gill as India’s new ODI captain, labeling it a forward-thinking decision, especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup set to take place in India.

In an exclusive interview with IANS, the former spinner discussed Gill’s captaincy, Rohit Sharma’s leadership attributes, the progress of Indian cricket, the rise of prominent cricketers from Punjab, the ongoing Asia Cup trophy controversy, and his endeavors to help flood-affected communities in Punjab.

He also commented on Lalit Modi releasing an old video featuring him and Sreesanth from 18 years ago, deeming it an unnecessary act. Here are some highlights from the interview:

Q. Was Shubman Gill’s appointment as ODI captain the right choice? Should Rohit have been given more time?

Gill has been appointed captain to reflect a long-term vision. With the 2027 World Cup on the horizon, this decision was made with that tournament in mind. While Rohit Sharma could have retained his captaincy, the selectors are considering the future.

Gill’s captaincy was put to the test in England, where he excelled. Following that series, the decision to pave the future path with Shubman Gill became clear. Rohit Sharma has proven to be an exceptional leader and commands respect in the dressing room.

Rohit has effectively united the team, and his ODI success rate is commendable. Although he could have continued as captain, the focus on future prospects was paramount. I wish Rohit all the best as he remains an essential figure in the team.

Q. Cricketers from Punjab are gaining recognition lately—how do you feel seeing players like Gill and Abhishek Sharma excel in the Asia Cup?

It’s an incredibly proud moment to witness players from Punjab achieving significant milestones on the global stage. Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill are both immensely talented, and their hard work is commendable.

Their current success is a reflection of their dedication, and it’s inspiring to see our region’s players performing at such a high level. Shubman has scored impressively in Tests, while Abhishek has made a name for himself in T20s.

This upward trend motivates more young athletes in our state to strive for greatness.

Q. Do you see yourself in a coaching capacity or on the selection panel in the future?

Cricket has shaped who I am today, and I long to give back to the sport. When the opportunity arises, I’ll be ready. I’m grateful to the BCCI for my opportunities; without them, I wouldn’t be here. I aim to assist the next generation of cricketers.

Q. What do you think about India not receiving the trophy after winning the Asia Cup amidst controversies with Pakistan?

The Asia Cup was filled with incidents—the handshake controversy aside, the main question was whether the matches should have occurred. India emerged victorious, and that’s the most important achievement. The trophy will eventually be awarded; it’s only a matter of time.

Q. How essential is public involvement in your role in the Rajya Sabha? How do you address community issues with the government?

I focus on important issues, both in sports and beyond. I strive to speak on them, although time is limited. When the floods hit Punjab, I was there to help. The welfare of my community matters greatly to me.

I’ve done everything possible, from rescue operations to providing food and diesel. I plan to return to Punjab and continue supporting those affected.

Sixteen villages were impacted by severe flooding, disrupting education for many children. I’ve committed to covering school fees for affected children for a year. If conditions don’t improve, our support will continue, as these children are our future.

People should allocate a portion of their earnings to organizations that assist communities in crisis.

Q. What are your views on sports development under the Modi government?

There is still much potential for growth in sports. Our population’s size compared to our medal tally shows we can improve significantly. It’s the responsibility of the sports authorities and the government to further promote sports.

While efforts are in progress, increased focus could yield even better results. Many talented kids are in villages, and with the right platform, they can excel. We should support any sport that requires assistance.

I hope the government continues to invest in sports, especially nutrition, as this could elevate our performance to match countries like Australia and China.

Q. Lalit Modi recently made public an old video of your disagreement with Sreesanth. Was that necessary?

I don’t understand why that needed to be released. The incident was regrettable, and I’ve since apologized. What transpired between Sreesanth and me was inappropriate. People learn from their mistakes, and I regret it.

Revisiting this after 18 years seems unnecessary. I don’t know the intention behind releasing the video—perhaps influenced by something. I wouldn’t have chosen to make it public.
