New Delhi, Oct 5 (NationPress) Harbhajan Singh expressed his support for the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) choice of Shubman Gill as India’s new ODI captain, deeming it a forward-looking decision, especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup set to take place in India.
In an exclusive interview with IANS, the former Indian spinner discussed Gill’s captaincy, Rohit Sharma’s leadership, the advancement of Indian cricket, the rising stars from his state association—Punjab, the controversy surrounding the Asia Cup trophy, and his efforts to assist flood-affected regions in Punjab.
He also commented on Lalit Modi releasing an outdated video featuring him and Sreesanth from 18 years ago, labeling it as an unnecessary action. Here are some excerpts from the interview:
Q. What are your thoughts on Shubman Gill's appointment as ODI captain? Should Rohit have retained his position?
Shubman Gill’s selection as captain is aligned with a forward-thinking strategy. With the World Cup 2027 approaching, especially hosted in India, this move was made with that vision in mind. While Rohit Sharma could have continued, the selectors are considering the long-term perspective.
Gill faced a significant challenge as captain in England and emerged with flying colors. Following that series, it became evident that Shubman Gill should guide the team into the future. Rohit Sharma is undoubtedly a talented player and has led the team admirably, earning immense respect within the squad.
Rohit has fostered a sense of unity within the team, which is evident in his impressive ODI success rate. While he could have continued as captain, this decision reflects a vision for the future. I wish Rohit all the best in his future endeavors as his leadership skills will still be valuable to the team.
Q. With more cricketers from Punjab excelling, how does it feel to witness their progress?
It fills me with tremendous pride to see athletes from Punjab achieving remarkable success on the global stage. Both Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill are exceptionally talented, but it’s their hard work that truly sets them apart.
Their current achievements are a testament to their dedication, and it inspires pride that players from our region are making significant impacts internationally. Shubman has excelled in Tests and led the team well, while Abhishek has carved a niche for himself in T20s with stellar performances.
This rise is uplifting and motivates more young talents from our state to aspire high and work diligently.
Q. Do you envision a future in coaching or joining the selection panel?
My identity is rooted in cricket, and I aspire to give back to the sport whenever the opportunity arises. The timing and nature of that chance remain uncertain, but I am genuinely thankful for the opportunities I’ve received. I aim to contribute to cricket and assist the upcoming generation.
Q. What is your opinion on India not receiving the trophy after the Asia Cup win amid controversies with Pakistan?
Much transpired during the Asia Cup, including the handshake controversy. However, the primary concern was whether the matches should have occurred at all. India clinched the tournament, and that victory is their greatest trophy. I believe decisions regarding the trophy should not overshadow our achievement. The trophy will eventually be awarded to us, so delaying it serves no purpose.
Q. How crucial is community involvement, especially during crises like floods?
Addressing important issues, whether related to sports or beyond, is vital. However, speaking up can be challenging due to time constraints. Recently, during the floods in Punjab, I was actively involved on the ground. It’s essential for me to ensure the safety and well-being of my people.
I have done everything within my means to assist, from rescuing individuals to providing food and diesel. I will return to Punjab and continue to support the community.
Sixteen villages were severely affected by the floods, and I am particularly concerned about the children whose education has been disrupted. Farmers struggle to pay school fees due to crop failures. I have committed to covering the educational expenses for these children for a year, and if needed, I will extend that support.
We must prioritize these children’s education and I encourage others to contribute towards organizations that assist communities in crisis.
Q. What are your views on the current state of sports development under the Modi government?
There’s still considerable room for improvement in sports. Our population is vast, yet our medal tally is not reflective of that capacity. I believe with more focus and support from sports authorities and the government, we can significantly enhance our performance.
While efforts are underway, increasing these initiatives could lead to better outcomes. Many talented youngsters exist in villages, and with proper platforms, they can excel. We should continue to support sports, and investing in nutrition can elevate our results to match countries like Australia and China.
Q. How do you feel about the resurfacing of an old video involving you and Sreesanth?
I fail to see the necessity of making that video public. It reflects a moment from the past that I regret. Bringing it back into the spotlight does not serve any purpose. I believe it would have been wiser to let it remain in the past.
I don’t understand the motive behind its release, and if I were in their position, I wouldn’t have allowed such footage to be shared.
