New Delhi, Oct 4 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Atul Wassan has expressed his support for the senior national selection committee's decision to appoint Shubman Gill as the ODI captain for the upcoming Australian tour, indicating that this change symbolizes a passing of the baton within the team.
The national selection committee has undertaken a significant restructuring ahead of India's forthcoming tour of Australia, naming Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain, taking over from Rohit Sharma. Shreyas Iyer will serve as his vice-captain for the three-match ODI series.
The squad includes the return of seasoned players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, whereas Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the ODIs, making way for Yashasvi Jaiswal to make a comeback.
On Saturday, the selectors appointed Test skipper Gill as captain, stepping in for Rohit Sharma, who had led India to the finals of the 2023 World Cup at home with an unbeaten record. Despite some fans being skeptical about having three captains in the team, both Rohit and his predecessor, Virat Kohli, have been included in the squad.
Wassan, however, fully supports the decision, declaring it a step towards the future. "This is a very wise decision. He is a player who plays all three formats and is performing exceptionally well," Wassan stated in an interview with IANS.
"Mujhe lagta hai yeh bahut samajhdari ka kam hai, kyunki yeh maturity batata hai," Wassan added. The 57-year-old ex-cricketer and current commentator emphasized that the decision reflects the maturity of the selection panel.
He remarked that past achievements alone should not dictate future choices. "Rohit and Virat have had their innings and contributed significantly to the country. However, I believe it is now time for new talent to step up," Wassan explained.
"This is akin to passing the baton. We have a player excelling in all formats, and he deserves this recognition. The two seniors -- Rohit and Virat -- are experienced players, and I think they would appreciate the chance to play freely without added pressure at this stage of their careers. They have accomplished everything in the sport, and their participation under Gill's captaincy will also bolster his confidence," he noted, having represented India in four Tests and nine ODIs.
