Paris, Feb 28 (NationPress) The Laureus World Sports Academy has made the decision to retract the nomination of Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner for the prestigious 2025 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award.

This action comes in light of a recent three-month suspension handed down to Sinner by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

In a correspondence sent to the nominations panel, the Academy clarified that despite the presence of extenuating circumstances in this situation, the suspension disqualified Sinner's nomination, as reported by Xinhua.

“After thorough discussions within the Laureus Academy, it has been determined that the nomination of Jannik Sinner for this year's Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award must be withdrawn. We have monitored this case and the decisions made by the relevant global organizations. While recognizing the extenuating circumstances, we believe that the three-month ban makes the nomination ineligible. Jannik and his team have been informed,” stated the Academy.

Earlier this month, WADA disclosed that Sinner had entered into a case resolution agreement after testing positive for clostebol in March 2024.

The three-time Grand Slam champion accepted the three-month suspension, admitting that while he did not consciously consume a banned substance and did not gain any competitive advantage from it, athletes bear ultimate responsibility for the actions of their support teams. WADA deemed this three-month suspension a fitting penalty.

Having triumphed at the 2025 Australian Open in January, Sinner is set to serve his three-month ban from February 9 to May 4, with four days already counted under provisional suspension, and he can resume training by April 13.

His return on May 4 will enable him to compete in the second Grand Slam of the season at Roland Garros, the site of the French Open, scheduled to take place in Paris, France, from May 19 to June 8.

The complete list of nominees for the 2025 Laureus World Sports Awards will be unveiled on March 3.
