London, July 14 (NationPress) Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj has incurred a penalty of 15% of his match fee due to a violation of the ICC Code of Conduct during the Test match between India and England at Lord's.
The controversy arose on the fourth day when Siraj delivered an intense opening spell, taking the wickets of Ben Duckett and Olie Pope. Following Duckett's dismissal, Siraj celebrated exuberantly near the batter and made contact as Duckett was heading back to the long room.
Siraj was found in violation of Article 2.5 of the ICC's Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which addresses “using language, actions, or gestures that may belittle or provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter after their dismissal in an International Match”.
In addition to the financial penalty, a demerit point has been added to Siraj's disciplinary record, marking his second offence within a 24-month period, bringing his total to two demerit points.
When a player accumulates four or more demerit points within a 24-month timeframe, they are converted into suspension points, leading to a potential ban.
This incident was one of numerous heated exchanges during a Test match poised to reach a nail-biting conclusion on day five.
At the close of day four, India found themselves in a precarious position at 58/4, having lost Yashasvi Jaiswal, Karun Nair, and captain Shubman Gill in the final session on Sunday. With 135 runs required for victory at the historic venue, India's hopes now rest on overnight batsman KL Rahul (33 not out) and Rishabh Pant, who will be on strike for the first ball on Monday.
Reflecting on India's situation in the match, all-rounder Washington Sundar expressed confidence in his team's ability to chase down the target.
"Absolutely, India will win tomorrow. Likely just after lunch. Given our current position, ideally, we would have preferred to have one more wicket at stumps today. However, the way we bowled, especially the fast bowlers, maintained pressure throughout the day was remarkable," Sundar commented.
