Southampton Dismisses Manager Russell Martin After Heavy Defeat to Spurs

Southampton, Dec 16 (NationPress) Following a devastating 5-0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, Southampton has dismissed their manager Russell Martin, with the Saints currently sitting last in the Premier League table.

Simon Rusk, the current Under-21s Manager, will take over as interim head coach until a permanent replacement is found.

In a statement, the club said, "The board has consistently supported Russell and his staff, maintaining an open and transparent dialogue regarding our expectations. We have all recognized the urgent need for results to improve our standings."

"We would like to express our gratitude to Russell and his staff for their hard work and commitment to the club both on and off the field over the past 18 months. Everyone associated with Southampton FC will always cherish the remarkable memories from last season, particularly the Play-Off Final victory in May," the statement added.

Martin, age 38, took the helm at Southampton in July 2023 and successfully guided them to promotion via the playoffs in his inaugural season.

However, since their return to the top flight, Southampton has managed to secure only one win, a 1-0 victory against Everton in November.

Martin is now the fourth manager in the Premier League to be relieved of his duties this season, following Erik ten Hag, Steve Cooper, and Gary O'Neil.
