Mitchell Starc's lethal four-wicket burst in the death overs powered Delhi Capitals to a commanding bowling performance, restricting Rajasthan Royals to 193/8 in 20 overs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, on Sunday, 17 May. Half-centuries from Dhruv Jurel (53) and captain Riyan Parag (51) had threatened to push RR well past 220, but a stunning six-wicket collapse in the final six overs unravelled the innings.

Starc's Match-Turning Spell

Starc began expensively, leaking 28 runs in his first two overs. His return spell, however, was devastating — conceding just 12 more runs while claiming all four wickets in his last two overs. Mixing slower balls with sharp changes of pace and angle, he triggered a collapse that saw RR lose six wickets for 33 runs from the 14th over onwards. Lungi Ngidi complemented him with 2 for 24, his pace-off deliveries proving equally difficult to read in the final stages.

Parag and Jurel's Promising Stand

At 160/2 in the 14th over, RR appeared in full control. Parag had raced to his fifty off just 23 balls — his fastest in the IPL — with five sixes and a four off Axar Patel and Mukesh Kumar in a spell of clean, muscular hitting. Jurel, meanwhile, found his boundary-hitting rhythm in the powerplay, clobbering an erratic Mukesh for two fours and a six in the sixth over. He went on to register his fourth fifty of the season before being trapped lbw by a Ngidi slower ball.

Sooryavanshi Sets the Tone at the Top

Before the middle-order fireworks, teenage opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had the 31,200-strong crowd on its feet with a blistering 21-ball 46. He opened with a pull over deep square-leg off Ngidi, then cut loose with edges and pulls before carting debutant off-spin all-rounder Tripurana Vijay for back-to-back fours and a maximum. From the other end, Yashasvi Jaiswal struck Starc for three boundaries in the opening over, including a crisp cover drive, before edging a Ngidi slower ball to Starc at short third man.

DC's Sloppy Catching Gifted RR Reprieves

Delhi Capitals were generous in the field. KL Rahul grassed an early chance off Jurel, while Sameer Rizvi put down a catch off Sooryavanshi at long-on. Most notably, when Parag was on six, a short ball looped to Tristan Stubbs at long-on — replays showed his fingers were not beneath the ball as it grazed the ground, handing Parag a crucial reprieve. Those drops proved costly in the short term, though DC's bowlers ultimately made amends.

The Collapse and DC's Fightback

Starc first deceived Parag with a slower ball in the 15th over, drawing a toe-end to diving long-on. He then dismissed Donovan Ferreira for a golden duck and trapped debutant Ravi Singh plumb lbw — RR burning a review in the process. Madhav Tiwari had Sooryavanshi caught at long-on off a slower ball, and later forced Shubham Dubey into a mistimed heave to deep backward square leg. Starc wrapped up the innings by having Impact Player Dasun Shanaka slice to long-off, leaving RR 33 runs short of where they appeared to be heading.
