Perth, Nov 12 (NationPress) Ben Stokes brushed off concerns regarding England's understated Ashes preparations, asserting that they will go 'balls to the wall' when they face the England Lions in their upcoming warm-up match.
Previously, former Ashes legend Ian Botham criticized the team's limited buildup, which consists of just one three-day match against a second-string squad before the initial Test at Perth's Optus Stadium. He labeled this approach as 'bordering on arrogance'.
Stokes highlighted the rigorous nature of the team's imminent preparation phase, stating that the next three days will be intense with no gradual easing in. With merely nine days left until the first Test, he acknowledged that many variables could change, but the primary goal will be to ensure all selected players gain valuable experience in match conditions.
“The next three days is balls to the wall for everyone. No easing into it. We've got nine days until that first Test match, so a lot can happen. This will be a great chance for everyone from our squad to get some time in the middle,” said Stokes during a press briefing here on Wednesday.
This week, the England squad gathered on Australia's west coast, with numerous players arriving from the white-ball tour in New Zealand, some returning from family vacations, and others joining the 18-player Lions group accompanying the tour.
This starkly contrasts the successful 2010-11 Ashes tour when England entered the series after achieving three first-class victories.
Botham remarked that his 1986-87 team played against state teams before clinching the Ashes and commented on the current low-key preparation, stating, “It's not the way I would prepare.”
In response, Stokes expressed, “With so much cricket packed into the schedule now, it's impossible to prepare like it used to be. But we haven't just started preparing for this tour in the last three weeks; we've been strategically planning this for years.”
“So what else is expected of us? There's Sheffield Shield cricket happening, so who would we even play against? We're about to face a team that includes a mix of our squad and the best available players in England. Many factors contribute to why we can't prepare as past teams may have done.”
“The cricket landscape has evolved. However, we are very confident and comfortable with our preparation, leaving no stone unturned,” he concluded.
