Will Stubbs Shine in SA20? Duminy Believes So!
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 8 (NationPress) Tristan Stubbs was surprisingly left out of South Africa's squad for the T20 World Cup. However, former cricketer JP Duminy asserts that the young player has demonstrated remarkable leadership qualities by guiding Sunrisers Eastern Cape to the pinnacle of the SA20 rankings. Duminy is confident Stubbs will achieve exceptional feats in the ongoing tournament.
At just 25 years old, Stubbs has emerged as one of the most thrilling young talents in cricket. He has gradually established himself as a fundamental player across all formats for South Africa and has proven himself as a reliable finisher for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.
Despite a recent dip in performance in T20 internationals, which led to Jason Smith being selected over him for the T20 World Cup scheduled in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, Stubbs has thrived in his first experience as a captain in the SA20 league, even though his total runs currently stand at only 28 in five matches.
“I think this is a fantastic opportunity for him to refocus. Naturally, there would be disappointment over missing out. He has been a part of various formats for some time, so missing the squad would be disheartening. Nevertheless, this leadership role shifts the spotlight onto others,” Duminy remarked during a virtual interaction with the Indian media facilitated by SA20.
“Seeing him step into a leadership position is encouraging. He possesses remarkable leadership traits, and while he hasn't yet delivered standout performances, he is someone who embodies leading by example. His ability to inspire others is a valuable quality. I have no doubt that he will accomplish remarkable things in this SA20,” Duminy elaborated.
Furthermore, Duminy expressed optimism that Stubbs would be prepared to seize any opportunities to step in as a replacement in next month’s major event.
“If an opportunity presents itself, we've seen in the past that injuries can open doors. This has certainly been the case for the South African team. There could be late call-ups, and he aims to ensure he is prepared for any eventuality,” he added.
