B. Sai Sudharsan has been ruled out of India's opening Test against Sri Lanka, scheduled to begin on 15 August in Galle, due to a persistent right big toe injury. The left-handed batter is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, and his availability for the second and final Test in Colombo — from 23 to 27 August — remains in serious doubt.

Nature of the Injury

According to sources familiar with the matter, Sudharsan is dealing with pain in the metatarsal of the big toe on his right foot, stemming from a stress reaction. While he has reportedly made progress in his recovery and has resumed batting, fielding, and conditioning drills, the lingering discomfort following skill work has raised red flags for the medical team.

'Sai has been definitely ruled out of the first Test as he needs more time to fully recover from the pain in his right big toe. The medical team is monitoring his progress closely, and a decision on his inclusion for the second Test will be taken later, though he's more of a touch-and-go for it,' a source familiar with the matter said.

Sudharsan's Test Record and What India Loses

In seven Tests, Sudharsan has accumulated 383 runs at an average of 31.91. His absence leaves a gap in India's top-order batting plans for a series that carries significant weight in the World Test Championship cycle.

Likely Replacements in Focus

Left-handed batter Devdutt Padikkal has emerged as the most straightforward like-for-like option. Padikkal struck a century off 121 deliveries, including 14 fours, on Day Two of the ongoing warm-up match against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI at the NCC Ground in Colombo before being retired out — a timely statement of form.

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel is also reportedly considering sending Ruturaj Gaikwad to Sri Lanka as a reinforcement. Gaikwad toured Sri Lanka as vice-captain of the India 'A' side in June–July, helping the team win a 50-over tri-series, though his red-ball returns in Galle — scores of 22, 1, and 13 not out — were modest. A definitive word on the replacement is yet to be confirmed.

Bumrah Also Out: India's Injury Woes Deepen

Sudharsan's absence compounds an already difficult injury situation for India. Star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was previously ruled out of the entire two-match series due to a left knee injury, with Auqib Nabi named as his replacement. The twin setbacks to a key pacer and a top-order batter add considerable pressure on the touring side ahead of a challenging assignment in Sri Lanka.
