Afghanistan's Follow-On Position

Afghanistan were bowled out for 152 in their first innings earlier in the day, conceding a massive 415-run deficit to India's declared total of 564/8. Forced to follow on, the visitors showed considerably more resolve in their second outing, resuming from 18/0 at lunch and frustrating India's bowlers for extended stretches before wickets began to fall at regular intervals.

Atal's Resistance and the Opening Stand

Opener Sediqullah Atal was the cornerstone of Afghanistan's response. Having already shown positive intent against debutant left-arm spinner Manav Suthar in the morning session, Atal blended caution with aggression and helped Afghanistan build their highest opening partnership against India in Test cricket. The off-spinner struck again when Hashmatullah Shahidi edged a turning delivery to first slip, where Shubman Gill completed a low catch confirmed on television review. Sundar's third blow came on the final ball before tea, when Atal — who had battled to 42 off 80 balls with five fours and a six — sliced a lofted drive to Prasidh Krishna at backward point.
