Suthar's Debut Spell

Bowling with discipline and extracting sharp turn from a helpful surface, Suthar dismissed Abdul Malik, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Afsar Zazai to emerge as the standout performer on his first day in Test cricket. Speaking after the day's play, Suthar described a simple but effective approach. 'My focus during the spell seemed to be on bowling in the right areas and backing my strengths. The wicket was helping, so my effort was to bowl in the right areas and hit the right length as consistently as possible,' he said.

Extracting Turn, Hitting the Right Length

Suthar elaborated on the specific strengths he leaned on during his debut spell. 'The focus was simple. The wicket was offering some help and my strength is getting the ball to turn. So my aim was to extract as much turn as possible because the pitch was assisting. At the same time, I wanted to keep bowling in good areas and hit the ideal length consistently, because that was where the help was coming from. That was my entire focus,' he explained.

This methodical mindset — prioritising process over outcome — is a hallmark of spinners who succeed at the highest level. Suthar's ability to maintain line and length across nearly 16 overs on debut, while also picking up three wickets, signals a maturity well beyond his experience at this level.

Gill's Captaincy Role

Suthar also credited India captain Shubman Gill, a familiar face from their time together in the IPL, for helping him settle into the Test environment quickly. 'Yes, possibly. Since we've played together, he understands my strengths and my bowling well. Based on that, he guides me regarding field placements, match situations, and the lines and lengths I should bowl,' Suthar said.

Gill's tactical awareness in deploying Suthar — knowing precisely when to bring him on and how to set fields that complement the spinner's natural tendencies — was notably evident through the afternoon session.
