New Delhi, Nov 24 (NationPress) Tokyo Olympics 2020 silver medalist Mirabai Chanu recently addressed the issue of inconsistent support from fans, joining Beijing 2008 bronze medalist Vijender Singh in a dynamic panel discussion titled “What India Needs for Its Next Olympic Heroes” at the FICCI Turf 2025 Global Sports Summit. The dialogue centered on the systems, mindset, and support essential for nurturing future Olympic medalists and was one of the event's major highlights.
While reflecting on the disparity between the support she garnered after her triumph at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the lack thereof following her injury at the Asian Games, Mirabai stated, “When I secured silver at the Tokyo Olympics, there were countless individuals waiting to greet me upon my return. However, after my injury at the Asian Games where I could not earn a medal, I arrived back in India to find no one at the airport. For our next Olympic champions to truly thrive, the support needs to be unwavering through both victories and defeats. Athletes excel when they know they are appreciated regardless of the outcome and have the support of everyone around them.”
She further stressed the necessity of cultivating the next generation to guarantee India’s success in international competitions, asserting, “We must prioritize the upcoming generation of athletes eager to bring medals to India. The key area to focus on is ensuring that their needs and preparations are fully addressed. There should be no gaps, and they must be provided with the right opportunities to flourish.”
Highlighting the significance of maintaining a steadfast and positive mindset before high-pressure competitions, Vijender noted, “We are the chosen ones, the fortunate ones. It is crucial to uphold the right mindset. No matter who we face, we must step out believing we can triumph. We need to view ourselves as the best and give our utmost. The mentality is paramount.”
Charu Sharma, Director of the Pro Kabaddi League, emphasized the role of family support during the panel, stating, “India requires more parents like Mirabai’s mother Tombi, who wholeheartedly encourage their children to pursue sports. This will transform our country’s prospects on a global scale.”
The panel highlighted the necessity for ongoing support for athletes, investment in youth, family engagement, and a robust sports infrastructure as crucial elements for India’s future Olympic champions.
