The second-seeded Suraj dominated the eighth-seeded Ryu with scores of 11-5, 11-9, 11-3, marking his fourth title on the PSA Tour and showcasing his impressive consistency with this being his fifth final appearance.
In the women’s category, Rouqaia Othman from Egypt claimed victory, defeating Malaysia’s Harleein Tan in a closely contested final. The seventh seed secured the title with a scoreline of 12-10, 11-7, 9-11, 11-7 against the second seed.
“We would like to express gratitude to our sponsors and partners, particularly MYAS and SAI, for their invaluable support. An Indian champion adds to the significance of this event,” remarked Cyrus Poncha, Secretary-General of SRFI, in light of the event’s success.
Suraj was the only Indian player to reach the semifinals in the men’s competition, demonstrating his prowess from the outset. He easily defeated compatriot Om Semwal in the quarterfinals before maintaining his strong form against Wailok To from Hong Kong in the semifinals, winning with scores of 11-8, 11-7, 11-6 to secure his spot in the final.
Semwal had earlier shown commendable skill, notably defeating Egypt’s Taha Elshafei in the second round before his journey ended in the quarterfinals.
Another noteworthy Indian player, Aryaveer Dewan, the current Asian U-17 boys champion, displayed remarkable resilience in his opening match, coming back from two games down to win against Shamil Wakeel from Sri Lanka in a grueling 71-minute match. Unfortunately, his campaign concluded in the second round when he lost to Suraj.
Currently positioned at 134th globally, Suraj’s recent victory is anticipated to enhance his international ranking, reflecting the rising stature of Indian squash on the global stage. His success at this tournament highlights the essential role of domestic training facilities like the Indian Squash Academy in Chennai, which are crucial for nurturing new talent and providing athletes with a platform for elite competition.
