Manav Suthar's 10-wicket haul powers India to 165-run win in Galle Test
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Manav Suthar announced himself on the Test stage with a stunning 10-wicket match haul, as India defeated Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the opening Test at the Galle International Stadium on 20 August, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The 22-year-old left-arm spinner, playing only his second Test, claimed 6-55 in Sri Lanka's second innings to finish with match figures of 10-101 — a performance that left his teammates searching for superlatives.
Suthar's Decisive Spell
Sri Lanka had shown resistance through Sonal Dinusha, who made 84 in the second innings after scoring a century in the first, and Dhananjaya de Silva, who contributed 59. The pair threatened to frustrate India's pursuit of a result on a sluggish Galle surface. Suthar, however, broke the partnership and dismantled the lower order, bowling Sri Lanka out for 206 while India defended a target of 372.
Player of the Match Devdutt Padikkal paid tribute to the spinner's rare gift for precision. 'You can tell that he's meant for this level. I think the amount of control he has in his bowling is exceptional, and when you have something like that, who can just keep going at the same spot again and again, it's really, really special,' Padikkal said in a video released by the BCCI on X. 'I'm sure he'll continue to develop, and I think we have a really good left-hand spinner in our hands,' he added.
Padikkal's 167 Sets the Platform
The victory was built on India's commanding first-innings total of 462, in which Padikkal himself played the central role with a magnificent 167. That knock gave India a 178-run first-innings lead — a buffer that ultimately proved decisive.
'On the first day, I think winning the toss was really important. It has always been key when you're playing at Galle, and we started well with the bat. I think putting on a really big total was the most important part of this Test match. It set us up pretty well for the rest of the match for us,' Padikkal said.
Patience and Discipline the Differentiator
Padikkal acknowledged that the Galle pitch was far from a bowler's paradise and credited the team's collective discipline for wearing down Sri Lanka's batting. 'It wasn't the easiest of wickets to bowl on. I think we needed a lot of patience to just keep chipping away as long as possible because they were playing some really good cricket as well,' he said.
He was particularly generous in his praise for Dinusha's effort across both innings. 'I think they batted really well, especially Sonal. I think in both innings he was exceptional, and when you have people playing at the highest level, it's important that we continue to keep working on our things. We did that really well. We kept plugging away, and I think eventually the patience showed in one over,' Padikkal added.
What's Next
India's attention now shifts to Colombo, where the second and final Test of the series is scheduled to begin on 23 August. A win or draw there would seal the series for India. Suthar's emergence as a match-winner on turning tracks in the subcontinent gives the team a potent new weapon heading into the decider.
