New Delhi, June 5 (NationPress) Former Australia Test captain Mark Taylor is advocating for Marnus Labuschagne to take on the opening role in the batting lineup rather than the young talent Sam Konstas when the team competes in the World Test Championship final against South Africa, commencing on June 11 at Lord's.
The discussion surrounding who will partner Usman Khawaja as the opening batsman for this crucial match at Lord's remains uncertain. Labuschagne, who last recorded a Test century in 2022, is being weighed against Konstas, who impressed with a score of 60 on his Test debut against India but did not open in the recent series against Sri Lanka.
“I’m not opting for Konstas. I’m excluding him and promoting Marnus to the top of the order just for this Test. I plan to include Konstas in my lineup for the West Indies tour and gauge his performance. Hopefully, he secures his place for the remainder of the year,” Taylor stated.
“Regarding Sam, reflect on his performance during the summer; his innings at the MCG was a surprise to many, perhaps even to himself. I don’t believe he typically plays in that manner. He took a risk by adopting a T20-style approach and was fortunate, but I doubt he can establish a successful career playing like that,” he added.
“What he needs to do is return to his original playing style, as he displayed in state cricket, rather than replicating his innings at the G. That should be his next step. Show us your full batting capabilities, not just the flick to third man, and then you can build a career as a top-order player,” Taylor remarked during his appearance on SEN Radio.
Additionally, he believes that including Cameron Green is a logical choice, given his recent return to competitive cricket through a county stint with Gloucestershire. “This highlights the high regard in which they hold Cam. With Green, you have a versatile cricketer, which is appealing,” Taylor said.
“Although he isn’t bowling currently, he can bat in the top four when in form. He’s a valuable asset, and they want him back immediately. My preferred batting order includes Uzzy, Marnus, Smith, Green, Head, Webster, and Carey, followed by the bowlers. The only dilemma is whether to select Boland or Hazlewood,” Taylor concluded.
