London, July 10 (NationPress) Renowned cricketing figure Sachin Tendulkar had the honor of ringing the legendary five-minute bell to mark the commencement of day one of the Lord’s Test between India and England on Thursday. This five-match series, contested for the trophy named after both Tendulkar and James Anderson, is currently tied at 1-1.
As he arrived, Tendulkar was joined by his wife Anjali and greeted the audience at Lord’s with a wave and a respectful namaste before ringing the bell to officially start this significant match for both teams. He was later seen conversing with former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
The tradition of ringing the bell outside the bowlers’ bar at Lord’s, initiated in 2007, has seen participation from cricketing legends, including Sunil Gavaskar, Sourav Ganguly, and Rahul Dravid.
Earlier, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) announced that Tendulkar would ring the bell on the same day his portrait, created by artist Stuart Pearson Wright, was unveiled in the MCC Museum. The MCC later confirmed that Tendulkar’s portrait would be displayed in the museum before being relocated to the Pavilion later this year.
Having retired from international cricket in 2013, Tendulkar is celebrated as one of the greatest batters in cricket history. The Mumbai-born right-handed batsman amassed an incredible total of 34,357 international runs across all formats—over 6,000 runs more than the next highest scorer, former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara.
As for the match at Lord’s, both India and England welcomed back Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer. After a four-year hiatus from Test cricket due to injuries, Archer is making his much-anticipated return for England, replacing Josh Tongue in the playing eleven. Meanwhile, Bumrah is back for India, taking the place of Prasidh Krishna.
