Melbourne, Dec 28 (NationPress) Travis Head has voiced his support for his opening partner Jake Weatherald, who has faced challenges at the beginning of his Test career, to make a comeback.
Weatherald, who debuted in the Ashes series opener after an impressive run in the Sheffield Shield, has scored only 146 runs across eight innings. The 31-year-old is anticipated to keep his position for the upcoming match at the SCG next week.
Despite his struggles, particularly with a string of low scores aside from a half-century in the opener, Head believes Weatherald has much to contribute and acknowledged that the conditions on Australian pitches during the four matches have been tough.
"International cricket is incredibly challenging. The wickets have been difficult overall in recent years, which is well-known. It’s not an excuse, and I genuinely believe he possesses the skills for international cricket, showcasing several promising moments throughout his initial four Tests," Head stated.
"Not everything is going to go your way, and many players who have faced similar pressures with the bat are among the best of our generation.
"Starting your international career can be daunting, but I think he has what it takes to succeed at this level," he added.
Head also expressed his willingness to continue as an opener as the Ashes series against England approaches the final Test of the home summer.
Since moving to the top of the order from No. 5, he has been a significant asset for Australia, scoring two centuries in the Ashes, currently leading the series in runs.
"I view myself as the opening batter for this team throughout the series, and we have a substantial break to strategize on the team’s future direction," Head mentioned.
"I feel confident at the top, and I believe I have been batting effectively. For this series, I have contributed positively, putting us in advantageous positions.
"It’s rewarding to contribute in various ways, and that’s why I’m always open to exploring how I can enhance the team’s performance. If it means playing at the top and improving our win rate, I’m all for it.
"There will be challenging moments, but at present, I feel I’m in great form, which positions me well against the new ball," he concluded.
