New Delhi, Feb 7 (NationPress) After returning from Australia's current tour of Sri Lanka, young opener Sam Konstas expressed his understanding of Travis Head's decision to open the batting at Galle, referring to the dynamic left-hander as a legend of cricket.
Following his impressive performances in the last two Tests against India, including a stunning 60 on his debut in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Konstas was selected for Australia's ongoing Sri Lanka tour.
However, he was replaced by Head, who was elevated in the batting order for the first match, which Australia won. Prior to the second match, Konstas was sent back home and now aims to play for New South Wales in their upcoming Sheffield Shield match against Queensland at The Gabba.
“I felt extremely fortunate to be part of the squad. It's been a valuable experience learning from elite players like Steve Smith, Travis Head, and Usman Khawaja, and observing their distinct approaches in these conditions. I've gained a lot of knowledge.
“I realized the reasons behind the decisions. For me, this is an excellent learning opportunity, and if I am granted another chance with the Test team, I will seize it wholeheartedly. I comprehend why Travis Head opened the batting; he is indeed a legend of the game and has been in top form,” Konstas stated to CODE Sports on Friday.
Discussing his domestic cricket prospects, Konstas noted, “This will be my first experience at The Gabba, and I hope that NSW can build some momentum and reach the finals.”
Konstas is set to contend against a Queensland bowling attack that features seam-bowling all-rounder Michael Neser, who secured 10 wickets in Queensland's first two Shield matches this season before suffering a hamstring injury while playing for Australia A against India A last year.
