New Delhi, Jan 1 (NationPress) Stefanos Tsitsipas revealed he pondered the possibility of retiring from professional tennis due to severe back pain that plagued him during the 2025 season. The 27-year-old, who previously achieved a world ranking as high as No. 3, was a finalist against Novak Djokovic at the 2021 French Open and the 2023 Australian Open.

Currently sitting at 36th in the world rankings after participating in only two Davis Cup matches following a second-round exit at the US Open in August, he expressed that he is beginning to see positive changes due to ongoing medical treatment.

“I'm particularly eager to evaluate how my training impacts my back. My primary concern was whether I could finish a match,” Tsitsipas shared with the BBC, mentioning that the injury had haunted him for “the last six or eight months.”

“I would often question myself, 'Can I play another match without pain?' After the US Open defeat [to Germany's Daniel Altmaier], I was unable to walk for two days. That’s when I started to rethink my career path,” he added.

Tsitsipas expressed satisfaction with his current treatment plan, having completed five weeks of pain-free training during the off-season. He is set to represent Greece in the United Cup, where they will compete against Naomi Osaka’s Japan and Emma Raducanu’s Great Britain in Perth and Sydney from January 2 to 11, just before the Australian Open.

In this competition, eighteen national teams, each comprising up to three men’s and three women’s players, will engage in a group stage followed by knockout rounds. Matches in Perth will take place at RAC Arena, while matches in Sydney will be held at Ken Rosewall Arena.

During the group stage, the eighteen teams will be divided into six groups of three, competing in a round-robin format. Groups A, C, and E will play in Perth, while groups B, D, and F will be in Sydney. The top team from each group, along with the best runner-up in each city, will advance to the quarterfinals.

Perth will host its two quarterfinal matches on January 7, with winners moving to Sydney for the semifinals and final. Teams advancing from Perth will have a travel and rest day on January 8-9. The Sydney quarterfinals are scheduled for January 8-9, followed by the semifinals on January 10 and the final on January 11.
