How Can WPL 2026’s UP Warriorz Adapt Quickly According to Skipper Lanning?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Vadodara, Jan 23 (NationPress) UP Warriorz captain Meg Lanning emphasized the need for her team to swiftly adjust to the conditions at the BCA Stadium following their 45-run defeat against Gujarat Giants (GG) in the 2026 Women’s Premier League (WPL) encounter, which has left their playoff aspirations hanging by a thread.
In the match on Thursday, UPW found themselves losing wickets rapidly, getting bowled out for 108 in just 17.3 overs, thus ending their two-match winning streak against a determined GG. “It’s more about the bounce than anything else. It’s not bouncing as much as it did in Navi Mumbai. However, that doesn’t mean scoring is impossible,” said Lanning.
“There’s still pace on the wicket; you just need to figure out how to utilize it and identify which shots work best for you since everyone plays differently. It’s certainly a pitch where runs can be scored. Adjusting and quickly evaluating the conditions is key,” she added during the post-match press conference.
Lanning identified the absence of solid partnerships as a significant factor behind UPW’s disappointing batting performance. “I believe we exhibited some excellent spells with the ball and had opportunities to capitalize, but we fell short in execution. We created chances but didn’t convert them as effectively as we aimed for, which is part of the game,” she stated.
“We could have potentially limited their score further if we had taken our opportunities. Yet, we were still chasing 150. I’m confident that if we establish good partnerships and our top order bats longer, we can successfully chase that total,” she noted.
“The conditions here differ significantly from those in Mumbai, but that doesn’t imply scoring is off the table; it requires finding a different approach. Players who manage to adapt have found success. There are valuable lessons here for us as we head into our upcoming matches,” Lanning concluded.
With UPW now languishing at the bottom of the points table, Meg is optimistic that this time will allow them to refine their strategy ahead of their match against the already qualified Royal Challengers Bengaluru on January 29, aiming to secure a spot in the top three.
“Securing a win would have certainly placed our playoff chances in a better position, but such is the nature of the sport. We still hope to be in contention when we take the field next; our focus is on winning the next couple of games to keep our hopes alive,” she expressed.
“We’ll take a brief break over the next few days; it’s essential. Nonetheless, we will return to training after a short hiatus and concentrate on our improvements. Our next opponent, RCB, is crucial, and we will give our all to ensure a strong performance,” she concluded.
