Will the Unchanged UP Warriorz Bowl First Against Gujarat Giants in WPL 2026?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Vadodara, Jan 22 (NationPress) The UP Warriorz have maintained their lineup and won the toss, deciding to bowl first against the Gujarat Giants in their encounter at the BCA Stadium, Kotambi, on Thursday during the 2026 Women's Premier League (WPL). The outcome of this match will determine who secures the second spot on the points table.
Currently sitting in third place, the UP Warriorz are on a positive trajectory, having bounced back from a three-match losing streak to achieve consecutive wins. Meanwhile, the Gujarat Giants, ranked fifth, are eager to end their own streak of three losses after starting with two wins.
“Putting pressure on Gujarat early would be advantageous. The conditions are a bit dewy already. We had a brief respite after our last game, which was much needed following a demanding schedule. We’ve been back to training recently, and the team is quite focused. Tonight’s game carries significant stakes,” remarked UPW captain Meg Lanning.
Gujarat Giants captain Ashleigh Gardner announced that top-order batter Danni Wyatt-Hodge will replace leg-spinner Georgia Wareham, and left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad is also included instead of Tanuja Kanwer.
“We initially intended to bowl as well, but considering our performances in the earlier games where we almost reached 200 runs batting first, we’re confident. Although this venue presents different challenges, we aim to set the pace early. Playing straight for an extended duration is essential here,” she explained.
“It might sound simple, but investing a few balls at the start of the innings is crucial. Given the fast outfield, it’s feasible to catch up quickly. If we focus on making sound decisions, we can aim to set a positive tone tonight. With just three games left, our goal is to win them all,” she added.
