Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on 20 July extended greetings to chess players, coaches, and enthusiasts worldwide on World Chess Day, reaffirming his government's commitment to consolidating the state's position as India's — and arguably the world's — foremost chess hub.

A Legacy Rooted in Anand's Breakthrough

In a message released on the occasion, Chief Minister Vijay traced Tamil Nadu's chess ascent to Viswanathan Anand, who became India's first Grandmaster in 1988. Vijay credited Anand's historic achievement with inspiring generations of young players and transforming Tamil Nadu into the country's most productive breeding ground for world-class chess talent.

The Chief Minister said Anand's legacy laid the structural foundation for the state's sustained dominance — a dominance now reflected in Tamil Nadu producing the highest number of young grandmasters in India.

New Generation of Champions

Vijay specifically congratulated three players who have carried that legacy forward: World Champion D. Gukesh, Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa, and Grandmaster Vaishali Rameshbabu. He said their performances on the international stage had brought pride not only to Tamil Nadu but to the entire nation, further elevating India's standing in global chess.

Notably, this generation of Tamil Nadu players has emerged within a remarkably compressed timeframe, signalling that the state's talent pipeline — built on dedicated coaching institutions and parental investment — is functioning at an exceptional level.

Reiterating his administration's commitment to sports promotion, Vijay assured that the Tamil Nadu government would continue providing opportunities, encouragement, and necessary assistance to talented chess players competing at the highest international level.
