Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 17 (NationPress) - Kerala's Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan celebrated the remarkable achievements of India's wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, who was instrumental in securing victory for India at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup earlier this month. The CM welcomed the World Cup champion to his official residence, Cliff House, on Monday (March 16) to commend his contributions.
The 31-year-old Samson attended the ceremony dressed in traditional attire, during which Vijayan presented him with a special memento that read, “We salute Sanju Viswanath Samson.” This memento also acknowledged his significant performances during the tournament's knockout rounds, including an impressive 97 runs from 50 balls against the West Indies in the Super 8 stage, followed by 89 runs off 42 balls in the semifinal against England, and another 89 runs from 46 balls in the final against New Zealand.
Taking to X, Vijayan expressed, “It was a pleasure to host India's pride and Kerala's own, Sanju Samson, at Cliff House yesterday. I conveyed the deep love and joy of the people of Kerala. May he find inspiration from his recent successes and continue to achieve greater heights. Wishing him all the best!”
Samson faced challenges during the tournament, initially being excluded from India's playing XI for their first match, as the management chose Ishan Kishan as the wicketkeeper alongside opener Abhishek Sharma. His position in the squad was also questioned after he scored only 46 runs in five matches during a home T20I series against New Zealand leading up to the World Cup.
However, he turned the tide with a series of match-winning performances, establishing himself as a key player in India’s victorious campaign.
After the celebrations, the Kerala player is now focused on the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League, where he will make his debut with the Chennai Super Kings, the tournament's five-time champions.
The Super Kings will kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against Rajasthan Royals, which is also Samson’s former team, in Guwahati on March 30. Following this, they will face the Punjab Kings at home on April 3, take on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 5, and return home to compete against the Delhi Capitals on April 11.
This season, Chennai aims to make a strong comeback after finishing last in the IPL 2025 standings with merely four wins out of 14 matches.
