Raipur, Dec 3 (NationPress) Right-handed batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad acknowledged the significant support he received from Virat Kohli while achieving his first ODI century during the second match against South Africa. He described their 195-run partnership as a remarkable collaboration.
During the match held at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur on Wednesday, Gaikwad scored 105 runs off 83 balls, featuring 12 boundaries and 2 sixes, recording a strike rate of 126.51. He reached his fifty in 52 balls, then accelerated impressively to complete his century in just 77 balls.
“Bating alongside him has always been a dream, and our partnership was indeed wonderful. He provided invaluable guidance throughout the innings on how to find gaps, anticipate the bowler's lengths, and adjust my technique to score runs while minimizing dot balls. It was a great learning experience for me,” Gaikwad expressed in a mid-innings interview.
Commenting on the game conditions, he added, “I was quite disappointed to miss out on runs in the last match. The pitch was excellent, and the conditions suited my style, so I felt really upset. Thankfully, today things turned out positively.”
“The pitch was more favorable for me today. I came in to bat around the 11th over, and I reminded myself to approach it like I had been batting for 25 or 30 balls after the powerplay, aiming to rotate the strike. The pitch had a slightly two-paced nature for the first 15-20 overs, but improved subsequently, and we adapted accordingly.”
Gaikwad concluded by mentioning their target of reaching 350 runs, expressing gratitude for achieving it. “While we were aiming for around 350, I’m glad we managed to get that total. It is a strong score, but having played here yesterday, I know there can be a lot of dew. Chasing 350-plus will undoubtedly be challenging.”
