New Delhi, Sep 29 (NationPress) Salum Ageze Kashafali captivated audiences on the second day of the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday. The powerful athlete from Norway shattered records by finishing the men’s 100m T12 in just 10.42 seconds.
This remarkable feat marks his third gold medal in the World Para Athletics Championships; he also clinched gold during the Tokyo Paralympics, where he broke records once again.
Kashafali’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary. Born in Congo, he was forced to escape due to the civil war, seeking refuge in several countries before eventually finding a home in Norway.
“I moved with my parents and six siblings first to Rwanda and then to Tanzania, where we spent a year in a refugee camp. In 2003, when I was just 10, Norway welcomed us,” he recounted in a conversation with SAI Media.
“The experience in Norway was a stark contrast. It felt like we had found safety; we could attend school and pursue athletics. It was a whole new world,” he added.
However, his initial time in Norway was not without challenges. “There was significant racism in school. We faced bullying and were told we didn’t belong there,” he stated.
“This took place in Vadso, and we had to request a relocation. They honored our request, and we moved to Bergen, where life improved considerably,” Kashafali shared.
But his struggles did not cease there. At the age of 22, he was diagnosed with a genetic disorder known as Stargardt’s disease, which severely impaired his vision. Following a challenging period, Kashafali redirected his focus to para-athletics and has since dominated competitions globally.
On his first visit to India, Kashafali expressed his admiration for the warmth of Indian hospitality. “India radiates positivity. The people are incredibly friendly, reminiscent of Congo. In Norway, individuals tend to be more reserved, while in Congo, it’s akin to India where everyone is open and willing to assist,” he noted.
Kashafali, who plans to return to Congo in 2028 following the Los Angeles Paralympics, was also taken by the grandeur of the JLN Stadium in New Delhi. “It’s one of the finest stadiums I’ve ever seen. The food is delicious and flavorful. Although Delhi is somewhat hot, the overall experience has been very enjoyable,” he concluded.
