Is Washington Sundar Back in Action Ahead of T20 WC?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Visakhapatnam, Jan 28 (NationPress) In a promising turn of events for India as they gear up for next month’s T20 World Cup, off-spin all-rounder Washington Sundar has resumed batting in the nets as part of his recovery from a rib injury at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.
“Indeed, Washington has started batting, albeit at a very low intensity. He managed to bat for a little while, which is quite encouraging. Some discomfort around his ribs is expected initially since he has been inactive for a while. However, he should be fine as he gradually progresses towards full recovery,” a source familiar with the situation informed IANS on Wednesday.
Sundar, 26, has been out of action since experiencing acute discomfort in his lower rib area while bowling during the first ODI against New Zealand at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara on January 11. He was subsequently ruled out of the remaining 50-over matches and the ongoing T20I series.
Following his injury, Sundar consulted orthopedic surgeon Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, Head of the Centre for Sports Medicine and Director of Arthroscopy and Shoulder Service at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. After a period of rest at his home in Chennai, he entered the CoE on January 20 to commence his rehabilitation program.
It is anticipated that Washington’s skill training workload will be increased gradually, although patience will be paramount as he is a crucial player in India’s strategy for defending their T20 World Cup title on home soil.
Meanwhile, there is no update available on when Washington will resume bowling. Since his debut in 2017, he has played 58 T20Is for India, taking 51 wickets at an economy rate of 6.91 and scoring 254 runs at a strike rate of 134.39.
