When Will the Selection Committee Hear from BCCI CoE Regarding Sundar's Recovery?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 5 (NationPress) The Indian Men's National Selection Committee is taking its time before naming a substitute for the all-rounder Washington Sundar, who has not yet rejoined the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026, commencing on February 7.
Sundar, currently in rehabilitation at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE), was included in India’s playing XI for the first ODI against New Zealand in Vadodara on January 11. Unfortunately, he sustained a rib injury while bowling but still managed to bat and contributed to India’s victory.
As per a report from Cricbuzz on Thursday, the selection committee is awaiting further information from the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE), but as of now, Sundar appears to still be in the plans of the team management and selectors for the World Cup.
The report also mentions that the final decision will hinge on the recommendations provided by the trainers and physiotherapists at the CoE. They remain optimistic about Sundar’s readiness for the significant event.
Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav shared an update on Sundar's situation after India secured a 4-1 series victory against New Zealand in the five-match T20I series. He noted that the all-rounder has resumed batting and bowling practices, expressing hope for Sundar's return to the team shortly.
“I believe Washy is progressing well. We spoke to both of them yesterday. Tilak is recovering nicely. Washy has almost resumed his bowling and batting. He looks good. We hope to have him back soon,” said Suryakumar.
The Indian cricket team is already gathered in Mumbai, preparing for their opening match of the T20 World Cup against the USA on February 7 at Wankhede Stadium.
