Former Australia captain Steve Waugh has stepped into a new role as co-owner of the Amsterdam Flames, a franchise built from scratch ahead of the inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL). Speaking ahead of the competition's first season, Waugh said the experience of constructing a franchise has reinforced his belief that personnel, structure, and preparation are the foundations of any successful team.

Waugh's Franchise Philosophy

'Building a franchise is similar to building any team. You've got to get the right people. You've got to get the right structure. You've got to have a formulated plan,' Waugh said in an interview with JioStar. He described this as his first close encounter with the T20 franchise model, and said he has been impressed by the training standards and tactical preparation he has witnessed at the Flames camp.

'The most important thing is to get the right people. And so, that's what we really concentrated on when we built the team, the Amsterdam Flames, from scratch. We wanted people with good character, people who could work together. But obviously, you need talent as well. So, if you get all those things coming together with good management, then there's a chance of being successful,' he added.

Star Names Alongside Emerging Talent

The Amsterdam Flames squad features established internationals including Steve Smith, Tim David, and Ajinkya Rahane. However, Waugh said it is the prospect of lesser-known players breaking through that excites him most. He pointed specifically to a young Canadian opening batsman he had watched in training, describing his ball-striking as exceptional and saying he was ready to 'showcase his skills on the world stage.'

'You have players of the calibre of Steve Smith, Tim David and Ajinkya Rahane, and then they're playing alongside these relatively unknown players from the rest of the world. They're going to be fast-tracking their progress. They'll have a blueprint for success. And you're going to see some names come out of this tournament that you've never heard before, but they're going to be potential superstars,' Waugh said.

What the ETPL Represents

The inaugural ETPL is entering uncharted territory, offering a shared dressing room to players from established cricketing nations and emerging ones alike. Waugh believes that cross-pollination of experience could become one of the tournament's defining features, with veterans accelerating the development of players still seeking a foothold on the international stage.

'This is the first season, so it's very important to get the first season established and for it to be successful. There's some amazing cricket players here, and I've no doubt that the cricket that is going to be played will be of a high standard,' he said.

For the Amsterdam Flames, the immediate priority is building a competitive identity in their debut season. Waugh's presence at the ownership level brings an experienced cricketing voice to the franchise's decision-making, though his stated focus remains on the team's foundations rather than personal involvement in on-field tactics. With the ETPL poised to serve as a launching pad for a new generation of T20 talent, the tournament's first edition will be watched closely as a test case for European franchise cricket's viability on the global stage.
