New Delhi, June 17 (NationPress) India’s all-rounder Shardul Thakur is optimistic about the touring Indian team’s chances of clinching the upcoming five-match Test series against England, which kicks off in Leeds on Friday.
Having been a part of India’s previous tour to England in 2021-22, Shardul recalls that India was leading the five-Test series 2-1 before the last match was postponed due to Covid-19. Unfortunately, India lost that final Test without their regular captain Rohit Sharma, resulting in a tied series at 2-2.
With both Rohit and Virat Kohli stepping back from red-ball cricket, the youthful Indian squad, now captained by Shubman Gill, faces the daunting task of excelling in challenging English conditions.
"Playing in this region is always thrilling as it presents various challenges. The unpredictable weather, ranging from cloudy to sunny, requires players to constantly adapt their game, whether they’re batting or bowling," explained the pace-bowling all-rounder in a video shared on BCCI’s social media.
"The influx of fresh talent and energy into the team is invigorating. As the England team has also evolved their playing style, we aim to surprise them and showcase our capabilities. Winning an away series would be a monumental achievement for our country," he stated.
Reflecting on India's recent Test tour to England, Shardul described it as one of his most cherished experiences, having taken eight wickets and scored two half-centuries in the fourth Test.
"The 2021 series was remarkable for us, winning key matches. Although we faced a rain interruption during one match that affected our chase, victories at Lord's and The Oval stand out in my memory. The series concluded with us returning for the fifth Test the following year, which ended in a draw. It remains one of my favorite Test series," he reminisced.
The Indian team is on a quest to win a Test series in England for the first time since 2007. The forthcoming five-match Test series marks India’s initial venture in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle.
