New Delhi, June 17 (NationPress) The Football Association (FA) has formally charged sacked referee David Coote for remarks he made concerning former Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp in a video that gained traction on social media.
The Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) suspended Coote's contract due to a breach of terms linked to his derogatory comments, leading to his dismissal a month later.
According to a statement from the FA, "It's alleged that the referee acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words contrary to FA Rule E3.1."
Furthermore, the statement indicated that this situation constitutes an 'Aggravated Breach', as defined in FA Rule E3.2, because it included references to nationality, either directly or indirectly.
Rule E3 pertains to improper conduct that tarnishes the sport's reputation, including insulting behavior or language, while also covering actions that question the integrity of match officials.
Following investigations into a video showing the English referee snorting ‘white powder’ while officiating at Euro 2024 last summer, UEFA suspended Coote from officiating any UEFA matches until June 30, 2026.
Nevertheless, Coote was exonerated by the FA regarding allegations of discussing the issuance of a yellow card before a Championship match between Leeds and West Brom in 2019. The 42-year-old was questioned about a yellow card given to Leeds player Ezgjan Alioski during the October 2019 game against West Bromwich Albion.
Coote has consistently denied all allegations, stating that he has always prioritized the integrity of the sport.
“Any personal issues I may have faced have never influenced my decisions on the field. I have maintained the highest regard for the integrity of the game, officiating matches fairly and to the best of my ability,” he stated.
