Four months into his position as Red Bull's "Head of Global Soccer," the 57-year-old ex-Liverpool manager finds himself responding to a crisis at the energy drink giant's flagship team: RB Leipzig. This two-time German Cup champion is facing an unusually challenging season.

Klopp's extensive role allows little time to oversee the various football operations under the Red Bull banner. While he and former German international Mario Gomez attended the recent promotion of FC Paris to Ligue 1, Leipzig was grappling with an escalating crisis, according to reports by Xinhua.

In March, Klopp's associate Zsolt Low stepped down from his position as Head of Soccer Development to take over as Leipzig's interim head coach, succeeding Marco Rose. Despite this shift, the team failed to secure a spot in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in years.

A significant restructuring seems unavoidable. Alongside searching for a new coach, Leipzig must revamp its squad. The pressure is intensifying on Klopp, who is now facing scrutiny from both supporters and the media.

Speculation has arisen regarding Klopp potentially taking on coaching duties himself, but his agent Marc Kosicke quickly rejected these rumors. "He is content in his role," Kosicke stated.

Nevertheless, media outlets are raising critical questions about whether Klopp is merely a symbolic figurehead or a legitimate decision-maker within the Red Bull football organization. Leipzig's CEO and former player Marcel Schafer acknowledged that substantial staff changes are imminent. At present, Leipzig's dreams of becoming a dominant force both nationally and internationally have stalled. With only a chance left to qualify for the UEFA Conference League, their upcoming Bundesliga match against Stuttgart feels like a mere consolation. Oliver Mintzlaff, Red Bull’s Head of Corporate Projects, previously highlighted the necessity for the next developmental step—a goal that now appears elusive.

The Suddeutsche Zeitung referred to this predicament as "Klopp's problem to solve," while Kicker labeled it as "a season in ruins." Even the prospect of hosting the 2026 Conference League final in Leipzig has not generated much excitement.

Burdened by costly, long-term player contracts and the impending expenses of hiring potential new candidates like Oliver Glasner from Crystal Palace and Cesc Fabregas from Como, Leipzig is facing a formidable path to recovery. However, financial troubles seem unlikely, as the club has reported approximately €450 million in revenue in recent years.

Schafer recognized both "economic and sporting challenges" ahead. "We need to implement more changes than we initially anticipated," he remarked, noting that the club is now seeking players with both "quality and mentality."

For Klopp, the celebratory atmosphere following his 2019 Champions League victory may be a distant memory.
