New Delhi, Oct 7 (NationPress) The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has imposed a one-year suspension on Aman Sehrawat, a bronze medallist from the recent Paris Olympics, following his disqualification for surpassing the 57kg weight limit at the World Championships held in Zagreb, Croatia, last month. The suspension, effective from September 23, restricts Sehrawat from engaging in any wrestling activities at both national and international levels until September 2026. This decision was confirmed by WFI President Sanjay Singh, who stated to IANS that the wrestler's response to the disciplinary notice was deemed "unsatisfactory."
"The Wrestling Federation of India has declared the suspension of Olympic medallist Aman Sehrawat due to a breach of weight regulations. The suspension, which took effect on September 23, bars him from participating in any wrestling events at both the national and international levels," Singh informed IANS.
Additionally, it was noted that Sehrawat's coaching staff also received formal warnings, but the federation had granted the wrestler a week to respond before finalizing the decision.
“Sehrawat's coaching staff have also been issued formal warnings. Nevertheless, the wrestler was given a one-week period to respond,” Singh mentioned.
The disciplinary committee reviewed the explanations provided by Sehrawat and his support team, concluding that they were insufficient. Furthermore, the committee highlighted that Sehrawat had joined the preparatory camp in Porec, Croatia, 18 days prior to his scheduled match on September 14, which should have allowed him ample time to manage his weight and fitness in line with regulations.
This incident marks the third disciplinary action against an Indian wrestler in a year, following controversies involving Vinesh Phogat's withdrawal from the Paris 2024 Olympics and Neha Sangwan's disqualification at the 2025 World Under-20 Championships for similar weight compliance and fitness issues.
The one-year ban could significantly affect Sehrawat's career, particularly his preparations for the upcoming 2026 Asian Games, which are set for September 30 to October 3. Unless the WFI alters its decision, the timing of this suspension could severely impact his ability to participate and perform in the continental competition.
